Have you completely lost power in Brisbane?
The best thing to do is call the energy regulator in your area (in Brisbane this will be Energex) to see if there are any outages. Power outages can occur from time to time, some may be planned or unplanned (such as in our heavy storm periods).
Have you lost partial power to your home?
If your safety switch is tripping and won’t reset, save yourself time and money by following these steps to reset your safety switch.
- If the safety switch is protecting a power circuit or multiple power circuits, go through your house and unplug all the appliances from the power points they are plugged into. Do not just simply turn the point off you need to physically unplug the appliance from the socket.
- Don’t forget some less obvious power points such as the dishwasher, gas cooktop igniters, range-hood, fridges, extension leads, power boards, lamps, external water pumps, etc.
- Double check you have unplugged all appliances from the power point throughout your home or workplace.
- Return to safety switch in the switch board and try to reset it by turning it back on. If your safety switch doesn’t reset call Reconnect Electrical on 0402 680 054.
- If it does reset, plug each appliance back in one by one, and check the safety switch after each appliance is plugged in.
If the switch is tripped, well done! You have located the faulty appliance. - If you have identified a faulty appliance, unplug the appliance and don’t plug it back in as this will keep tripping the circuit.
- Reset the safety switch again.
- If your appliance is faulty depending on the value of the appliance you can get a repairer or return it under warranty, although if it is a small value appliance it may be best to throw it in the bin and replace it with a new one.
- Please note – some brands of safety switches & circuit breakers need to be switched into the full off position after they have tripped to then be able to reset them again after the fault has been cleared.
Please always remember, that if you notice anything that seems or looks unsafe e.g electrical crackling, smoking or any arching from appliances or switches, it is always best to call a licensed professional to come and check over the system. Never attempt to work with electricity if you have not been trained to do so.
